Local organisations to help shape future of former Johnnie Walker site

Local Kilmarnock organisations and businesses are being given the opportunity to help shape the future of the former Johnnie Walker site in the town in a special ‘conversation’ event to be staged next month.

Representatives from Ayrshire-based sports, educational, cultural and other community and business organisations have been invited by developers, The Klin Group, to participate in the event which is being held at Centrestage in Kilmarnock on Wednesday, 5th June.

The Klin Group has an exclusivity agreement with Diageo, the current owners, in order to come forward with a plan to develop the site. The Klin Group’s vision is for a dynamic new quarter for Kilmarnock town centre, based around education, health, community sports and culture, including an arena that would provide a year-round, all weather venue for sporting, conferencing and entertainment events.

The development would focus on facilities and premises for enterprise, entrepreneurs and start-up businesses, driving a new economy for Kilmarnock and East Ayrshire, but serving a much wider area with facilities that would be unique in Scotland. The Klin Group are keen to hear views and engage with community groups and businesses from across Ayrshire to help shape the development.

Marie Macklin, Chairwoman of The Klin Group, said:

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to create something special that will bring long-lasting benefits to the town and to Ayrshire as a whole. Everything we have in mind would link into the work of Kilmarnock College, in particular, and local schools in general and would inspire and support local sports and cultural groups.
“We are determined to produce a development that we can all be proud of, that is deliverable and that will serve the needs of the whole community. To do that, it is vital that we engage both public and private sector interests to ensure that the end result is not only special but sustainable.”

Any organisation wishing to participate in the consultation event can register by emailing enquiries@klinhomes.co.uk or by calling 01563 530454.
